Domain price increases are controlled by ICANN. They determine the market value and, while the price may differ in a small way from domain registrar to domain registrar, they're usually pretty close. Prices for domains do however increase periodically.
Most registrars give an initial deal that's pretty cheap if you get multiple years and then increases to full price on renewal.
