Using my own my.cnf file in a shared server

I would like to change the default storage engine of my mysql to InnoDB, is this possible in a shared server? Can we request this somewhere? I have added my own .my.cnf file in my home directory, but it requires a restart of the mysql service of my server to load (if I am understanding this correctly).
