Enable modern authentication for iOS, iPadOS and macOS devices using Apple Mail or Outlook for Mac

In 2023, Microsoft disabled Basic authentication for Exchange Active Sync (EAS) and Exchange Web Services (EWS) in Exchange Online. Basic authentication is an outdated industry standard with increased security risks from attackers capturing user credentials.

Anyone in your organization with an iOS, iPadOS or macOS device that uses Apple Mail or Outlook for Mac must enable modern authentication, or OAuth 2.0. It's more secure than Basic authentication and supports multi-factor authentication (MFA) with modern methods like one-time text messages and authenticator apps.

To find out what you need to do, select your email platform and device:

If you can't follow the steps on your iOS or iPadOS device, troubleshoot common issues:

After Basic authentication is disabled for your organization, Outlook may prompt you to re-enter your Microsoft 365 email password, which will switch your device to modern authentication automatically. Your computer must be using macOS version 10.15 or later.

If you can't see your email or aren't prompted to re-enter your password, removing and re-adding your account in Outlook on your computer will enable modern authentication:

  1. To remove your account from Outlook for Mac, open the Outlook app on your computer.
  2. In the upper-left corner, select Outlook, then Preferences, and then Accounts.
  3. Select an account, and then (minus).
  4. To confirm you want to remove your account, select Sign Out.
  5. To re-add your account to Outlook, in the upper-left corner, select Outlook, then Preferences, and then Accounts.
  6. Select + (plus), and then New account.
    • You might need to choose your account type as Work or school (not Personal) to continue.
  7. Enter your email address, and then select Continue.
  8. Enter your email password, and then select Sign in.
  9. If your admin enabled multi-factor authentication (MFA), verify your account or set up the Authenticator app.
  10. Select Done.

After removing and re-adding your email account, it’ll automatically start using modern authentication.
