Enable modern authentication for Microsoft Office 2013 on Windows devices

You can no longer connect to mailboxes in Outlook 2013 on Windows devices using Basic authentication, an outdated industry standard deprecated in 2023. Using Basic authentication makes it easier for attackers to capture user credentials, which increases the risk of those stolen credentials being used against other endpoints or services.

What do I need to do?

Since you can no longer use Basic authentication for Outlook 2013, you can do one of the following instead:

  • Enable modern authentication for Office 2013: Modern authentication, or OAuth2.0, is more secure and supports multi-factor authentication, or MFA, with modern methods like one-time text messages and authenticator apps. Configure specific registry keys to enable modern authentication for Office 2013.
Note: Our GoDaddy Guides cannot walk you through making registry changes. See our Statement of Support.
  • Upgrade to Business Professional: It comes with the latest version of Office software, so it comes with modern authentication enabled by default. Compare email plans.
  • Use Outlook on the web: Access is not affected. Sign in to Outlook on the web.
